Construction of the Expiatory Temple of La Sagrada Familia began in Barcelona in 1882 and has been funded by donations from people around the world. It is the culmination of the work of the great architect Antoni Gaudí, who dedicated a large part of his life to this church and designed it with the techniques achieved on his other buildings. He worked on the project for forty-three years until his death. During the last twelve years, he worked exclusively on the Temple and defined the project clearly so that work could be continued in his vision. The Basilica of La Sagrada Familia is a unique building that has grown as an expression of the Christian faith. Its logical and marvelous architectural solutions, its synthesis of shapes, its structure, and its symbolism are explained in these pages.
