Dovede chladnokrevně využívat slabosti druhých ve svůj prospěch. Ožení se soudcovou dcerou, která čeká dítě s jiným mužem a v závěru románu se s celou rodinou stěhuje do Jeffersonu. Postupně se do vesnice přistěhuje řada příbuzných, kteří brzy vládnou celému kraji. Jednání Snopesů sleduje a ironicky komentuje podomní obchodník Ratliff, který rozpozná rozpínavost celé rodiny, ale ani on ji nezabrání.

V českém jazyce vychází tento titul poprvé; do češtiny nebyla přeložena ani zkrácená verze.
