Le vieux général Sternwood, à demi paralysé, est affligé de deux filles. Vivian et Carmen, qui sont absolument dépourvues de sens moral et se livrent à leurs vices avec une fureur maladive. Pozvedl daný žánr na vysokou literární úroveň a má velký podíl na tom, že se detektivka stala uznávanou i těmi nejpřísnějšími kritiky. Kromě sedmi románů, které naši čtenáři již dobře znají, je Chandler autorem řady povídek, z nichž některé vyšly v češtině ve sbírce Poslední útočiště. Příběh se odehrává v prostředí velkého filmového světa. Dalmas pracuje jako soukromý detektiv pro jednoho z filmových magnátů, kterého však záhy nalézá v jeho bytě zastřeleného.
