Rudolf Bahro (1935–1997) byl jedním z nejvýznamnějších marxistických kritiků společenského zřízení Sovětského svazu a jeho satelitů. Knihu Alternativa (1. vydání 1977) napsal jako řadový občan východního Německa na základě zážitku z potlačení pražského jara. Po jejím vydání v SRN byl východoněmeckým soudem odsouzen na sedm let vězení s formálním odůvodněním, že v knize vyzrazuje utajované skutečnosti. V říjnu 1979 byl amnestován a vystěhoval se do SRN. Stal se zde jedním ze zakladatelů strany Zelených. Bahro obecně na sovětských režimech kritizoval orientaci na ekonomický růst a koncentraci politické moci v rukou aparátů. Jako alternativu navrhoval zavedení přímé demokracie, ekologickou udržitelnost a radikální společenskou rovnost. Podle východoněmecké Stasi šlo o „vysoce rafinovanou a nebezpečnou antikomunistickou propagandu“, její liberální kritici ji zase pokládali za „nebezpečně nepřiměřenou utopii“. Herbert Marcuse knihu označil za nejdůležitější marxistickou práci posledních desetiletí.

2007 gab es mindestens drei Gründe, um an Rudolf Bahro zu erinnern. Vor 30 Jahren erschien seine Sozialismusanalyse 'Die Alternative' und machte ihn weltberühmt. Vor 20 Jahren kam die 'Logik der Rettung', in der er essentielle Kritik am Industrialismus übte und zur Umkehr aufrief. Und schließlich waren 10 Jahre seit Bahros Tod vergangen. Guntolf Herzberg hat aus gegebenem Anlaß und auf Bitte des Rudolf-Bahro-Archivs der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin den Nachlaß gesichtet. Sein Sammelband bietet einen bislang unveröffentlichten Essay Bahros aus dem Jahr 1995, einen Extrakt aus seinen mehr als 60 Vorlesungen sowie Reden, Interviews und Aufsätze, die bislang verstreut publiziert wurden. Die Textsammlung zeigt Bahro einmal mehr als tiefgründigen Denker, der die drängendsten ökologischen Weltprobleme reflektierte. Angesichts der Debatte über die endlich wahrgenommene Klimakatastrophe wird deutlich, wie sehr Bahro seiner Zeit voraus war und wie aktuell er ist.
