Paladino della libertà di pensiero, ha affascinato lettori nel corso dei secoli con le sue teorie filosofiche e la sua figura controversa, spesso avvolta da leggenda. Uomo di vasta cultura, partecipò ai dibattiti religiosi e sociali del suo tempo, esprimendo la necessità di una radicale secolarizzazione della teologia tradizionale, incompatibile con l'ortodossia ebraica e cristiana. Sebbene non fosse un teorico dell'ateismo, il suo sistema non contempla un Dio trascendente; tuttavia, presenta un Dio, il "Deus sive Natura", che si manifesta attraverso la ragione e le leggi della natura e della società. Questo volume include l'opera più importante del filosofo olandese, pubblicata postuma nel 1677, l'"Ethica ordine geometrico demonstrata", insieme al "Tractatus theologico-politicus", l'unico libro pubblicato durante la sua vita, un manifesto contro il fanatismo. Die Ethik ist Spinozas Hauptwerk, an dem er von 1662 bis 1675 gearbeitet hat. Sie enthält das Ganze seiner Philosophie, die er - wie kein anderer bedeutender Philosoph - in einem einzigen Werk zusammengefaßt hat. Das in fünf Teile gegliederte Werk enthält im ersten Teil eine Theorie elementarer Strukturen der Welt, im zweiten Teil eine Theorie menschlichen Erkennens und in den restlichen drei Teilen eine Ethik vernünftigen menschlichen Handelns, auf die - wie der Titel Ethik signalisiert - die gesamte Philosophie hinausläuft. Die vorliegende Edition stützt sich auf Gebhardts kritische Ausgabe (Spinoza Opera Bd. II, 1925), verbessert den lateinischen Text aber unter Berücksichtigung der Ergebnisse der jüngsten Texterforschung. Die Übersetzung - die erste deutschsprachige seit der von O. Baensch aus dem Jahre 1905 - wertet die neuerbrachten Forschungen zur Philosophie Spinozas aus und vermag so den Gehalt dieser schwer zugänglichen Philosophie angemessener als bisher zu erschließen.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe beinhaltet die philosophischen Hauptwerke Spinozas. Band I enthält den einzigen von Spinoza selbst editierten Teil seiner Werke, wobei die Übersetzung von Carl Gebhardt (neu bearbeitet von Günter Gawlick, Hamburg 1976) für den deutschen Text gewählt wurde. Der lateinische Text basiert auf der Heidelberger Ausgabe (1924, 2. Aufl. 1974) und enthält relevante Korrekturen aus der Forschung sowie wichtige Lesarten und Spinozas Annotations. Band II bietet den lateinischen Text zusammen mit der deutschen Übersetzung von Berthold Auerbach. Notwendige Korrekturen und Erläuterungen sind im Anhang enthalten, und der lateinische Text wurde anhand der Heidelberger Ausgabe und der Originaldrucke überprüft. Wichtige Lesarten werden ebenfalls dokumentiert.

Raný metodologický spis (1660-1662) novovekého holandského filozofa Barucha Spinozu v novom slovenskom preklade a bilingválnej latinsko-slovenskej verzii. Hoci ide o kratšie a nikdy nedokončené dielo, podľa niektorých názorov predstavuje Logiku k Spinozovej Etike. Jeho ústrednými motívmi sú otázka pravdivého poznania, možnosti jeho realizácie a súvisiace formulovanie metód “prečistenia” intelektu založených predovšetkým na správnom rozlišovaní medzi intelektom a predstavivosťou.

Compendium grammatices linguae hebraeae je jedním z posledních děl Benedikta Spinozy (1632–1677). Tematicky zde filosof navazuje na problematiku pojednanou již v Traktátu teologicko-politickém; nezbytnou podmínku pro jakékoliv diskuse o teologických otázkách totiž spatřoval v důkladné znalosti pramenného jazyka. Na rozdíl od předchozích zvyklostí usiluje o zcela sekulární a na Bibli nezávislé pojetí. Význačným rysem spisu je teorie lingvistického monismu, tj. nauka o slovních druzích, které jsou Spinozou v rámci hebrejštiny chápány téměř výhradně jako jména a jejich deriváty. Téma prapůvodní dokonalosti jazyka, historickokritický přístup k náboženské tradici, ale také základní ontologická koncepce holandského filosofa, to vše je zde syntetizováno do nového celku. Studium tohoto spisu zprostředkovává čtenáři neobvyklý pohled na Spinozovo myšlenkové dílo, zejména pokud jde o některé motivy z židovské tradice v něm obsažené. Zároveň představuje zajímavý dokument jazykovědy 17. století, který je v řadě aspektů srovnatelný s dobovými lingvistickými projekty, ať již se jedná o univerzální gramatiku port-royalské školy, nebo o umělé jazyky vytvořené na filosoficko-logickém základě. Přeložil a úvodní studií a poznámkami doplnil Pavel Vrtílka.

La primera parte, que abarca cinco capítulos, vuelve sobre las reflexiones en torno a los fundamentos del Estado, anteriormente expuestas en el Tratado teológico-político y en la Ética , y su mayor novedad estriba en la profundización del estudio sobre la naturaleza del derecho político. La segunda parte, casi totalmente original, describe la organización de las tres formas clásicas de gobierno y, aunque la muerte le impidiera concluir la sección dedicada a la democracia, el examen de la monarquía y de la aristocracia permite a Spinoza analizar con minuciosidad el funcionamiento de la maquinaria estatal. Atilano Domínguez Basalo explica, en su prólogo a la obra, las claves últimas de un pensamiento tan rico como complejo: «La “anomalía” o el enigma de Spinoza consiste en que, partiendo de una metafísica panteísta y determinista, deduce, con toda lógica, una política humanista, progresista y liberal, y que, inspirándose en un filósofo materialista y absolutista [Hobbes], defiende, por encima de todo, la libertad de pensamiento y quiere conciliar el poder de la multitud con la seguridad del Estado».

Stěžejní dílo Barucha Spinozy, v němž je prostřednictvím geometrické formy podána jeho vlastní filosofická pozice. Z ní Spinoza znovu promýšlí ústřední motivy karteziánské filosofie (substance, atribut, modus, res cogitans, res extensa,...) a fixuje jejich silový charakter. Samotná spinozovská etika záleží na vůdčím pojmu afektu. Ontologický a etický rozvrh se tak vzájemně podmiňují v jednotné kompozici Spinozova metafyzického stanoviska a představují jednu ze základních epochálních ražeb západního myšlení.

Spinoza entwickelt in seinem Traktat die Grundlagen von Toleranz in der Religion und Liberalität in der Politik und plädiert vehement für die Freiheit philosophischen Denkens. Er wendet sich gegen ein falsches Religionsverständnis der zeitgenössischen Theologen und legt – als einer der ersten Denker – die Bibel historisch-kritisch und nicht dogmatisch aus. Spinoza erörtert die im Feld des Religiösen aufgewiesene Freiheit im Hinblick auf den besten Staat und zeigt, dass die Freiheit zu philosophieren die unabdingbare Voraussetzung für Frieden im Staat ist. Die Neuausgabe des Textes enthält neben einer Einführung und erläuternden Anmerkungen des Herausgebers auch ein Verzeichnis der Bibelstellen sowie ein Namen- und Sachregister.
