Professional .NET Framework has been designed as a practical guide to the .NET Framework. It covers the Common Language Runtime environment in which .NET applications are deployed and managed along with the fundamental structure of the base class libraries upon which Microsoft's .NET platform relies. It has been written using beta 2, a feature complete version of the .NET Framework. This book provides the essential aerial view of the framework, placing .NET in a meaningful context with current programming frameworks, before delving into detail with a thorough, practical, example-led approach to exploring and working with the constituent parts of the framework. It systematically covers namespaces and their extended classes, which professionals will need to work with to build distributed, scaleable, applications. It also covers the techniques required to expose or consume code over the Internet as Web Services. Professional .NET Framework also examines best practice for designing and constructing applications, engineering .NET components, and utilizing COM interoperability. The final section of the book provides a chapter and case study dedicated to approaching migration to .NET. The book drills down to a level which scopes specific classes in detail yet retains a focus on imparting information in the most practical, relevant and useful way, to make the transition to .NET as smooth and clear as possible. For over four decades, the demand for Star Trek stories has led to five television series, over seven hundred episodes, ten feature films, and an animated series. From the early short-story adaptations by James Blish in the 1960s to the original novels of the 1970s and beyond, fiction has significantly expanded the Star Trek universe. This exploration delves into why these books serve as a powerful creative outlet for some and a fresh way to engage with the Star Trek mythos for others. The work reflects on the first forty years of professionally published Star Trek fiction, showcasing the personalities and creative sensibilities of its contributors. It provides an insightful look into the creative processes, challenges, innovations, and progress within this literary landscape. Author Jeff Ayers has engaged with nearly six hundred books and interviewed over three hundred authors and editors to create a comprehensive guide to this unique publishing phenomenon. Fully illustrated with book covers, the work includes an index by title and author, as well as a detailed timeline, making it an essential resource for every fan.

    • Ballantine paperback, 4th printing (1975) with Karl Swanson. The novel was first serialized in Galaxy Magazine in 1956, and published in book form the following year. Pohl has a reputation of one of SF's master satirists; this novel is about a world in the throes of a low-intensity global war, which appears to be an amplified representation of the Vietnam War (in which the U.S. was just becoming involved).

But even as he gambles on the breakthrough technology, he is wracked with the guilt of losing his wife, poised forever at the "event horizon" of a black hole where Robin had abaondoned her. As more and more information comes back from the expedition, Robin grows ever hopeful that he can rescue his beloved Gelle-Klara Moynlin. • Wealth . . . or death. Those were the choices Gateway offered. Humans had discovered this artificial spaceport, full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious, vanished Heechee. Their destinations are preprogrammed. They are easy to operate, but impossible to control. Some came back with discoveries which made their intrepid pilots rich; others returned with their remains barely identifiable. It was the ultimate game of Russian roulette, but in this resource-starved future there was no shortage of desperate volunteers.

Every man, woman and child lay in the grip of fear, for no one knew at what moment his nearest friend or a casual stranger might suddenly be possessed by some brutal mind ... and begin to murder and destroy. For Chandler it was worse than for most. He was both victim and executioner. He had suffered himself, and he had committed a violent crime while under the strange domination. Accusing of hoaxing he was driven from his home. He wandered the world and found it smashed like a spoiled child's plaything―now Chandler was in the very presence of the destroyers! • In a vastly overpopulated near-future world, businesses have taken the place of governments and now hold all political power. States exist merely to ensure the survival of huge transnational corporations. Advertising has become hugely aggressive and boasts some of the world’s most powerful executives. Through advertising, the public is constantly deluded into thinking that all the products on the market improve the quality of life. However, the most basic elements are incredibly scarce, including water and fuel. The planet Venus has just been visited and judged fit for human settlement, despite its inhospitable surface and climate; colonists would have to endure a harsh climate for many generations until the planet could be terraformed. Mitch Courtenay is a star-class copywriter in the Fowler Schocken advertising agency and has been assigned the ad campaign that would attract colonists to Venus, but a lot more is happening than he knows about. Mitch is soon thrown into a world of danger, mystery, and intrigue, where the people in his life are never quite what they seem, and his loyalties and core beliefs will be put to the test.

Modern science fiction emerged in the 1950s, particularly in America, where it broke free from traditional conventions. Writers began to explore their imaginations in novel-length works, marking an era of stylistic experimentation and speculative storytelling that addressed the uncertainties of a rapidly changing world. Often overlooked by the literary elite, these “outsider” novels are now celebrated as American classics. This volume presents four distinct visions of uncertain futures and evolving identities. Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth’s The Space Merchants (1953) offers a satirical take on a future dominated by multinational advertising. Theodore Sturgeon’s More Than Human (1953) explores the journey of damaged individuals toward a potential new stage of evolution. Leigh Brackett, one of the first prominent female science fiction writers, presents a post-nuclear world in The Long Tomorrow (1955), where anti-urban technophobes clash with the remnants of a destroyed civilization. Richard Matheson’s The Shrinking Man (1956) tells the tale of a man shrinking due to a mysterious cloud, facing humiliations and dangers that lead him to a surprising and transformative realization. Each novel opens new territory, reflecting the dynamic energies of an age grappling with the unknown.

This young cadet from Marinia had been born and raised four miles beneath the waves, and he knew that more than rich new fuel sources and precious stones lay in wait for the men who dared invade this last frontier. But when David dived into the depths at thirteen hundred feet and disappeared -- only to reappear, drifting offshore months later -- his friend Jim Eden learned there was more truth to certain superstitions than he cared to believe. On a strange and hazardous journey, Jim and the men of the sub-Sea Academy suddenly found themselves up against the dangerous creatures of the deep -- and embroiled in a life-against-life adventure they would never forget!

But the Krakatoan Dome has been specifically designed to cope with the tremors of its seaquake-prone area. The trouble was, all of a sudden, there were more quakes than any of the experts had counted on...quakes that no one could possibly have forecast because they hadn't come from natural causes. The Sub-Sea Academy had assigned Cadet Jim Eden to the Krakatoan Dome to find out what was going on, and for very special reasons.

Fred Pohl, a celebrated science-fiction author, delivers an exhilarating chase-intrigue narrative set in the energy-scarce 2020s. The story follows Reverend Hornswell Hake, who leads a mundane life filled with power shortages and pastoral duties, including counseling the lively Alys Brant and her unconventional family. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he is reluctantly recruited as an agent for the Team, a secret organization that has risen from the ashes of the discredited CIA. Almost immediately, he finds himself embroiled in a mission related to the ongoing Cool War, a global campaign of sabotage that has replaced traditional warfare. As Horny and Alys navigate Europe, they encounter a host of eccentric characters, including Leota, the alluring leader of an anti-Team underground; Yosper, a foul-mouthed, Bible-thumping assassin; the troublesome Reddi twins, who appear at the worst moments; and Pegleg, a master of deadly gadgets. This fast-paced and picaresque tale offers not only humor and irony but also a thought-provoking glimpse into a possible future, making it a compelling read for fans of speculative fiction.

Kniha, kterou sestavil, obsahuje výběr povídek od pěti dalších Velmistrů: Roberta A. Heinleina, Jacka Williamsona, Clifforda D. Simaka, L. Sprague de Campa a Frize Leibera. Dále obsahuje informace o Asociaci amerických spisovatelů science fiction a fantasy a Pohlovy osobní zážitky z jejího vedení.

Cesta na Gateway líčí příběhy prvních, velmi nebezpečných cest, úžasných objevů a neohrožených průkopníků, kteří sledovali činnost nezachytitelných Heecheeů a navždy změnili průběh historie lidské rasy!
