Erich Wolfgang Korngold, geboren 29. Mai 1897 in Brünn, war Sohn des Musikkritikers Julius Korngold, dem Nachfolger von Eduard Hanslick (Neue Freie Presse). Schon früh wurde seine Begabung offenbar, bereits mit 11 Jahren schrieb er das pantomimische Ballett Der Schneemann, welches 1910 an der Wiener Hofoper uraufgeführt wurde. Auch sein Klaviertrio op. 1 enthält alle Ingredienzien eines ausgereiften Werks. Schon bald wurde Korngold als Wunderkind gefeiert und Dirigenten wie Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler u. a. bemühten sich um die Aufführung seiner Werke. Seine Opern (u. a. Die tote Stadt 1920 und Das Wunder der Heliane 1927) wurden große internationale Erfolge. 1934 wurde er von Max Reinhardt nach Hollywood geholt, um die Musik für dessen Film A Midsummer Night‘s Dream zu schaffen. Korngold gelang dabei die Etablierung eines neuen musikalischen Genres, nämlich der Filmmusik à la Korngold, welche bis heute als Maßstab gilt. Nach dem Anschluss Österreichs 1938 konnte Korngold aufgrund seiner jüdischen Herkunft nicht mehr nach Österreich zurückkehren und blieb als Filmkomponist von Warner Brothers in Hollywood (zwei seiner Filmmusiken wurden mit einem Oscar prämiert, 1936 Anthony Adverse, 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood). Seinem Versuch, nach 1945 mit seinem Stil auf europäische Konzertpodien zurückzukehren, war kein Erfolg beschieden. Erich Wolfgang Korngold starb am 29. November 1957 in Los Angeles.
