Mit seinen Freunden, dem Koala und dem Hasen, spielt der Wombat Verstecken in einer wüstenähnlichen Landschaft. Doch er will sich nicht so richtig an die Regeln halten: gerade als er mit dem Suchen dran ist, versteckt er sich selbst und lässt die anderen warten. Beim 2. Versuch läuft er - anstatt seine Freunde zu suchen - verträumt weg und sammelt auf einer abgelegenen Wiese Blumen. Plötzlich stellt das kleine Tier fest, dass es sich wohl verlaufen hat. Wieder sind es nun die anderen, die den inzwischen verzweifelt weinenden Wombat suchen müssen. Doch erst am nächsten Morgen wird er gefunden. Überglücklich drückt sich der kleine Ausreisser nun an die Brust seiner Mutter. Insgesamt eine nette, aber leicht zum Kitsch tendierende Geschichte, illustriert mit eher realistischen, grossflächigen und farbenfrohen Illustrationen, die die Tiere in üppiger Natur zeigen.
