Norman Mailer était un romancier, journaliste et essayiste américain, reconnu comme un pionnier de la non-fiction créative et du mouvement du Nouveau Journalisme. Son écriture explorait souvent les réalités brutes de la vie américaine, abordant des thèmes de violence, de pouvoir et de la psyché masculine. Au risque de décevoir, on peut affirmer que le lecteur ne le saura pas, même arrivé au terme de cette oeuvre prolixe, curieusement intitulée "roman", qui contient pourtant une mine inépuisable de renseignements pour psychologues, sociologues, etc. Malgré quelques réserves, l'oeuvre est à classer parmi celles qui dominent la littérature criminelle mondiale.
