Tento naoko vecný prístup k téme je o to silnejšou a pôsobivejšou sondou do psychiky vraha a mechanizmu amerického právneho systému v súčasnej spoločnosti s jej morálnou apatiou. Hlavný hrdina Gary Gilmore, ktorý sa po osemnástich rokoch väzenia dostáva na slobodu, nie je sám, ale navzdory tomu sa nevie zaradiť do normálneho života. Na príčine nie je len zlyhanie systému väzenskej prevýchovy, ale aj prostredie silne poznačené mormónskym náboženstvom, subkulúra bezcieľnej mladej generácie, ale aj kult materiálnych statkov a osobná dezorientácia, ktoré nevyhnutne predurčujú blížiacu sa katastrofu.
