La Metaphysique de Baumgarten a ete le livre de reference de Kant durant les quelque quarante annees de son enseignement consacre a ce theme. Cet ouvrage a meme inspire, dans la Logique transcendantale, le plan de composition de la Critique de la raison pure. La Metaphysique de Baumgarten fut aussi le plus celebre manuel de metaphysique en Allemagne au XVIIIe siecle. On peut y voir en quelque sorte le testament de la Schulmetaphysik, avant sa grande remise en question dans la Critique de la raison pure, et le document emblematique de ce qu'on a appele la philosophie leibnizo-wolffienne, dont Baumgarten fut peut-etre le seul veritable representant, a tout le moins le representant le plus illustre.

Die „Metaphysik“ von Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, zuerst in lateinischer Sprache 1739 erschienen, war seinerzeit eines der verbreitetsten Philosophie-Lehrbücher. Auch Immanuel Kant legte es seinen Metaphysik-Vorlesungen zu Grunde. Nach Baumgartens Tod übersetzte sein Schüler Georg Friedrich Meier das Werk; und 1783 wurde es nochmals von Johann August Eberhard mit Kommentaren herausgegeben. Die vorliegende Ausgabe gibt den Text der Ausgabe 1783, mit allen Abweichungen zur Ausgabe von 1739. Ergänzt wird der Text durch eine Einführung von Dagmar Mirbach, eine Konkordanz zur lateinischen Ausgabe und durch eine Bibliographie der Werke Baumgartens.
L'opera di Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762), rimasta a lungo ai margini degli sviluppi della riflessione filosofica, è da alcuni anni al centro del rinnovato interesse degli studiosi perché in colui che tenne a battesimo l'estetica (della quale coniò anche la parola: "æsthetica" da "aisthesis", "sensibilità") si vanno ritrovando indicazioni preziose anche per il dibattito teorico della contemporaneità. Rinnovata attualità, del resto, motivata già dalla semplice ragione che Baumgarten intese l'estetica in modo molto più articolato di quello che poi s'impose nell'Ottocento (ed oggi appunto viene messo in discussione), ossia una mera "filosofia dell'arte", intitolandola ad un orizzonte ben più generale, cioè l'intera esperienza sensibile nei suoi ambiti più diversi: dalla ricerca scientifica alla pratica religiosa alla stessa vita quotidiana. E tuttavia, proprio L'Estetica, la sua summa teorica, ha continuato a rimanere di difficile accesso, per il suo ispido latino e forse perché le sue strutture concettuali rispondono ad un universo di riflessione a lungo poco frequentato. Questa prima edizione italiana, condotta secondo rigorosi criteri scientifici, mira dunque a rendere trasparente il pensiero estetico di Baumgarten in tutta la ricchezza delle sue articolazioni, dando modo al lettore di confrontarsi proficuamente non solo con il "battista" della nuova scienza, ma con il primo grande piano tematico dell'estetica moderna, tuttora ricco di nessi scarsamente esplorati, di ragioni che conservano la loro smagliante intensità teorica.
