    Quantification of miniaturization in the field of computers and other fields of technology and a measure of this
    Measurement and rating of computer systems performance and of software efficiency
    • ISO has introduced a new method for describing and measuring performance across various data processing systems and applications, addressing the challenges posed by numerous incompatible methods and terms. This method is outlined in the International Standard ISO/IEC 14756. The textbook caters to both performance experts and novices, as well as academic users, presenting the latest performance measurement techniques while also serving as a guide for applying the standard. It includes two advanced aspects: a rating method for computing user-required performance values (reference values) and a process for comparing these with actual measurements to determine if user requirements are met. Additionally, the standard extends its methodology to evaluate the run-time efficiency of both application and system software, providing a framework for quantifying and measuring this property. Each chapter delves into specific performance measurement aspects, supplemented with exercises and provided solutions. Since manual measurement is impractical, the book includes necessary software tools on a CD, published under GNU license. While not designed for professional measurements, this software allows readers to execute all steps involved in performance or software efficiency measurement.

    • n various technical fields it can be observed that younger versions of the respectively used technical devices or components thereof always have smaller spatial dimensions and this with the same or even better performance. This phenomenon is called “miniaturization”. In the course of an investigation , a measure size for quantification of the miniaturization of hard discs was needed , but was not found despite intensive search. A project “Quantification of miniaturization” was started and a measure size has been developed: “Miniaturization degree” mD . The new measure size is presented here. mD has proved to be very versatile, is easy to handle and can quantify miniaturization well. The application of mD is illustrated by examples (hard disc, File server). In a further study the question of whether there is a limit of miniaturization of hard disks is investigated. Although the need for this tool arised from computer problems, its applicability is not limited to this. It can also be applied to many miniaturization questions in other areas of technology.
