This volume is the outcome of a scientific meeting of the Collegium ORLAS, held to discuss fundamental research problems which are clinically relevant to otorhinolaryngology. The two areas of focus were immune-mediated diseases of the inner ear, and the treatment of head and neck cancer. Effective prevention of these cancers, as clearly demonstrated, requires a solid scientific basis, particularly with respect to the role of extrinsic carcinogenic factors in combination with viral infections.
