This unique reference volume covers the 18 dialects of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Alsace and Luxembourg. Each section discusses the status of dialect in the region concerned together with the historical and geographical background. Then follows a description of the dialect structure of the region, copiously illustrated with phonological, grammatical and lexical examples in IPA transcription. The phonology, grammar and vocabulary of one typical dialect are presented together with a commentary. All examples are given with English glosses. The volume will be of most interest to Germanists with some knowledge of the linguistics and history of German, wishing to deepen their knowledge of German dialects. General linguists and sociolinguists who wish to know about German dialects will also find it useful. It can serve as an intermediate level textbook for any course on German dialects which builds on a linguistics or history of German course.

This book presents a dynamic account of the phonemic changes between MHG and NHG. The nature of MHG is re-examined by selecting as a basis texts from 1150 to 1270, although reconstructed MHG is also used. As well as standard NHG forty-one dialect monographs are used to show the variety of developments in dialects. The book contains eight maps based on these dialect monographs. The main patterns of phonemic changes are followed though from MHG to NHG using secondary literature to document changes.

Die hochalemannische Mundart des Dorfes Bosco Gurin im Tessin, das Gurinerdeutsch, ist bekannt als eine archaische Mundart. Dieses höchst gelegene Dorf im Tessin wurde im 13. Jahrhundert gegründet. Es ist eine selbstständige Gemeinde mit ungefähr 70–80 Einwohnern. Außer der Mundart werden das Italienische, ein Tessiner Dialekt und das Hochdeutsche in der Sprachgemeinschaft gebraucht. Das Gurinerdeutsch ist oft Gegenstand der Mundartforschung gewesen, bis jetzt jedoch nicht mit einer ausführlichen Untersuchung. Diese Arbeit basiert auf zwei Grundlagen: 1. auf eigenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Tonbandaufnahmen und teilnehmender Beobachtung des sprachlichen Verhaltens der Sprecher und 2. auf unveröffentlichten, handschriftlichen Quellen, die in der Arbeitsstelle des Schweizerdeutschen Wörterbuchs in Zürich vorhanden sind.
