Aujourd’hui, ni le vieillissement, ni la mort ne font partie des tabous importants, et des cercles existent, qui réclament même une légitimation de l’euthanasie active. Aussi bien les personnes concernées que les proches, les soignants et la santé publique se voient confrontés à ces décisions capitales. Restent les questions graves: le sens de la souffrance, de la mort, de l’existence sur terre et au-delà. Ces questions inséparables de l’image que l’on a de l’homme, restent aujourd’hui sans réponses valables. Pourtant, il est possible de les approcher scientifiquement et il est même nécessaire de le faire! Le livre montre des possibilités de recherche et les moyens pour une médecine palliative étendue. Il résume les contributions d’un congrès en prenant comme exemple d’approche la médecine anthroposophique. Par ces moyens, on peut démontrer qu’il est possible de mourir dignement en se passant totalement de l’euthanasie active et du suicide.

This book is the first thorough introduction into the scientific basis of anthroposophy and anthroposophical medicine in the context of academic science. On a sound epistemological basis and in the context of current debates it analyses basic concepts of physics, chemistry, genetics, morphogenesis, biology, neurobiology, psychology, and philosophy of mind, with an emphasis on the problems of life, mind-body interactions, and free will. The result is a non-reductionistic anthropology acknowledging the emergent properties of body, life, soul, and spirit as equally real entities. This concurs with the basic concepts of anthroposophy and anthroposophical medicine, the justification of which is discussed in relation to the history and methodology of science as well as evidence based medicine.

Based primarily on patient needs and public demand, the concept and practice of 'integrative medicine' has gained increasing popularity and interest among health care professionals and academic research institutions. Coined by a German internist, the term 'integrative medicine' originally designated the integration of evidence-based forms of alternative or complementary treatments into conventional medicine. This idea gradually transformed into to a more general concept of integrative medicine, including the integration of different medical approaches, a new attention to the whole person and the practitioner-patient relationship, the specific issues of health, and new forms of inter-professional cooperation. This supplemental issue of Complementary Medicine Research presents an overview over a selection of research topics and projects from the Institute of Integrative Medicine whose aim is to develop an integrative and person-oriented approach to health care and medical education, and thus to contribute to the overall research focus of the Faculty of Health at the Witten/Herdecke University.

Der dritte Begleitband zu Rudolf Steiners Ärztekurs «Geisteswissenschaft und Medizin» behandelt die Vorträge 4 und 5. In 127 Kommentaren werden Steiners medizinische Ansichten im Kontext seines Gesamtwerks sowie in medizinhistorischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen erläutert. Zentrale Themen sind die Beziehung von Mensch und Natur sowie die Rolle von kosmischen Prozessen im menschlichen Körper.

Der zweite Begleitband zu Rudolf Steiners Ärztekurs «Geisteswissenschaft und Medizin» erläutert die ersten drei Vorträge und bietet rund 150 Stellenkommentare. Er vertieft das Verständnis von Steiners Ideen zur Erneuerung der Medizin und behandelt zentrale Themen wie Krankheitsdispositionen und die Rolle des Herzens. Weitere Bände sind geplant.

Dieses Buch ist die erste gründliche Einführung in die Wissenschaftsgrundlagen der Anthroposophie und der anthroposophischen Medizin im Kontext der akademischen Wissenschaft. Dabei ermöglicht die Erkenntniswissenschaft Rudolf Steiners eine bisher kaum beachtete solide Grundierung der modernen Wissenschaften. Physik, Chemie, Genetik, Morphogenese, Biologie, Neurobiologie, Psychologie, Anthropologie und Philosophie des Geistes werden durch sie ihrer reduktionistischen Form entkleidet und bilden so die empirische Grundlage eines neuen, geistgemäßen wissenschaftlichen Verständnisses von Mensch und Natur. Das wird an aktuellen Grundfragen nach dem Wesen der Substanz, des Lebens, der Wechselwirkung von Leib und Seele und der Freiheit des menschlichen Geistes aufgezeigt. Das Resultat ist eine nicht-reduktionistische Anthropologie, die die emergenten Eigenschaften von Körper, Leben, Seele und Geist als verschiedene, aber gleichermaßen reale Wesensschichten des Menschen anerkennt. Das ist kongruent mit den grundlegenden Konzepten der Anthroposophie und anthroposophischen Medizin, aber auch mit der klassischen Anthropologie des Abendlandes. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich diese Anthropologie historisch und erkenntnismethodisch in die moderne Anthroposophie weiterentwickelt hat, und wie sich deren Erkenntnisresultate zur modernen naturwissenschaftlichen Forschung verhalten, besonders in der Medizin. Das Buch ist auch als Wissenschaftsgrundlage der Pädagogik sowie anderer Fachgebiete geeignet, die es mit dem Menschen als Ganzem zu tun haben.
