Examination of the role of German women in borderlands activism in Germany's eastern regions before 1939 and their involvement in Nazi measures to Germanize occupied Poland during World War II. Harvey analyses the function of female activism within Nazi imperialism, its significance and the extent to which women embraced policies intended to segregate Germans from non-Germans and to persecute Poles and Jews. She also explores the ways in which Germans after 1945 remembered the Nazi East.

The Weimar Republic gave German youth new social rights and a pledge of generous educational and welfare provision. Public social and welfare policies would, it was hoped, banish the spectre of delinquent and rebellious youth, and ensure that the future citizens, workers, and mothers of Germany's new democracy would be well-adjusted, efficient, and healthy. Elizabeth Harvey examines a wide range of policies implemented by central and local government, and assesses the responses to them. Her analysis provides new insights into the troubled development of the Weimar welfare state and the crisis into which it was plunged by the Great Depression, and makes an important contribution to the debate over continuities between Weimar Germany and the Third Reich.

How should we understand Hitler as a factor in the history of the Third Reich? In recent years scholarly interest in the German dictator has once again intensified, as is evident from debates surrounding the publication of Mein Kampf, and from the publication of numerous new studies on Hitler’s personality, ideology and politics. Edited by Elizabeth Harvey (University of Nottingham) and Johannes Hürter (Institute for Contemporary History Munich – Berlin), the third volume of the German Yearbook of Contemporary History presents the latest in German research on Hitler based on selected articles from the Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte. Additionally, it includes new commentaries by renowned experts from the English-speaking world on theories concerning Hitler’s personality and authenticity, the sources of his radical racism, and the relationship between the dictator and German society.

Bereits vor der nationalsozialistischen Machtübernahme 1933 boten Kampagnen zum »Schutz des Deutschtums« jungen Frauen die Möglichkeit, sich im ländlichen Osten als sogenannte Grenzlandaktivistinnen zu betätigen. Sie sollten helfen, ein Bollwerk gegen slawische und jüdische Fremde aufzubauen. Nach dem Überfall auf Polen 1939 wurden deutsche Mädchen und Frauen für die besetzten Gebiete rekrutiert. Sie sollten neu angesiedelte volksdeutsche Familien unterweisen und so einen »Gemeinschaftsgeist« wecken. Elizabeth Harvey rekonstruiert, welche Rolle Frauen und Mädchen im Besatzungsalltag und in der deutschen Expansionspolitik spielten. Und sie erforscht ihre Motive und Handlungsspielräume. Insbesondere die von Harvey geführten Interviews machen deutlich, wie unterschiedlich das Engagement von Frauen bei der rassenpolitischen »Neuordnung« Osteuropas sein konnte, die mit Versklavung und Vernichtung einherging. Harveys Studie vermittelt neue Erkenntnisse über die Strukturen und Mentalitäten der Besatzungsgesellschaft im Osten. Und sie zeigt, dass die Mitwirkung von deutschen Frauen am nationalsozialistischen Unrechtsstaat häufig unterschätzt wurde.
