    Translating literatures - translating cultures
In this conference volume, eleven American and German scholars explore literary translation as a complex practice of intercultural transfer from various theoretical and historical viewpoints. This interdisciplinary volume is addressed to scholars of comparative literature, drama, cultural studies, and translation theory.

      Translating literatures - translating cultures
    • This book features a series of essays that delve into the transformative insights of Fichte, Herder, Humboldt, and the Romantics regarding the essential role of language and imagination in shaping human experience and art. It explores how language, self-consciousness, and understanding emerge through speech, alongside discussions on literary art, the philosophy of history, German humanities, philology, and semiotics. The author also examines the significance of phenomenology and interpretation within literary theory. By highlighting the ideas of A. W. Vico, F. Schlegel, Novalis, Germaine de Staël, and Schleiermacher, the author elucidates themes of romantic poetics, translation, discourse, and cultural transfer. The work presents a hermeneutic analysis focused on the interpretations of language by Fichte, Herder, Humboldt, and the Romantics, investigating how language and imagination shape experience and art. It addresses semiotics, philology, and the philosophy of history, while emphasizing the role of phenomenology and interpretation in literary criticism. The author particularly underscores the views of Vico, Schlegel, Novalis, Staël, and Schleiermacher, shedding light on translation, discourse, and cultural transfer theories, as well as the poetics of the Romantics.

German-American Cultural Transfer from the 18th to the End of the 19th Century

      • 418pages
      • 15 heures de lecture

This volume attempts for the first time a comprehensive view of the momentous process of German-American cultural transfer during the 18th and 19th centuries, which played an important part in the formation of an American national and cultural identity, a process to which the New England Transcendentalists contributed some of the decisive ingredients, but which has largely escaped the attention of German and American scholarship. In each chapter a specific problem is treated systematically from a clearly defined perspective, deficiencies of existing translation theories are exposed, so that in the concluding chapters 13 and 14 (with an unpublished memorandum by Alexander von Humboldt) a cohesive view of the entire process emerges. A comprehensive bibliography will facilitate further scholarly pursuits.
