Islands, both literal and figurative, recur in fiction authored by many prominent Canadian women writers. Using a critical lens based on Northrop Frye and Julia Kristeva, this book closely examines fourteen novels by eight twentieth-century authors, emphasizing works by L. M. Montgomery, Margaret Laurence, and Margaret Atwood. Several of the novels, such as Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables , Laurence’s A Jest of God and The Diviners , Atwood’s Surfacing and Bodily Harm , Alice Munro’s The Lives of Girls and Women , and Gabrielle Roy’s The Tin Flute , are among Canada’s most well-known. Some of the works discussed present the island as a redemptive retreat, but in most cases the island’s role is ambiguous, ranging from a temporary respite from life’s pressures to a nightmarish trap.

Focusing on Congressional debating, Sheckels challenges the notion that such discussions are merely tedious and inconsequential. By applying Mikhail Bakhtin's theories, he introduces a polyphonic paradigm that recognizes the multiplicity of voices within debates, including those of authorities and everyday citizens. This approach highlights the complexity of discourse, featuring elements like double-voiced discourse and carnivalesque energy. Sheckels emphasizes that Congressional debates are dynamic and resist definitive conclusions, offering a fresh perspective on their significance in communication studies.

The Lion on the Freeway is a thematic introduction to post-1950 South African English literature. After examining the nation's political history and four earlier landmark works, the study examines the oppressed peoples' «moods», ranging from loving to attacking; the oppressors' «attitudes», ranging from ignorance to action; and the contradictory forecasts the literature offers for South Africa. The study scrutinizes works in numerous genres by thirty-one authors (8 white; 23 non-white). Among them are J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Dennis Brutus, Bessie Head, Mazisi Kunene, Oswald Mtshali, and Mongane Wally Serote.
