Image analysis is a computational achievement where humans excel compared to computers, yet the demand for automatic image processing is rapidly increasing. Applications such as biometric authentication (face, fingerprint, iris), online character recognition in smartphones, and drug design tools highlight its growing significance. This progress is largely due to the contributions of the research community over the past 30 years. The pattern recognition and computer vision fields host large conferences attracting around 1,000 participants, reflecting the importance of vision in human activities. Automating routine visual tasks can enhance comfort and support sustainable development. This research area could be termed visual intelligence, as it encompasses nearly all aspects of human cognition and behavior. Humans utilize images and pictorial languages to represent and analyze complex concepts across various domains, including science, mathematics, philosophy, religion, music, and emotions. The volume serves as an introductory textbook on signal analysis in visual computation, aimed at senior undergraduates and graduate students in science and engineering. The goal is to present commonly used techniques for image analysis within a unified framework of directional image processing.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Audio- and Video-based Biometric Person Authentication, AVBPA'97, held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in March 1997. The 49 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected by the program committee for inclusion in the book; also included are four invited contributions. The papers are organized in sections on facial features localisation, lip and facial motion, visual non-face biometrics, face-based authentication, text-dependent speaker authentication, text-independent authentication, audio-video features and fusion, and systems and applications.
