    • This volume is based on lectures from the "Chemistry at the Beginning of the Third Millennium" meeting held in Pavia, Italy, from October 7-10, 1999. The event featured participation from scientists representing German and Italian universities within the Coimbra Group, established in 1987 to promote research and teaching initiatives among prestigious European universities. Each year, member universities propose a scientific theme, leading to a meeting hosted alternately in Germany or Italy. The Pavia meeting was the fifth in this series, following previous gatherings in Bologna, Jena, Siena, and Heidelberg. Focused on chemistry, the meeting included a series of lectures by distinguished scientists covering a wide array of contemporary topics. Subjects discussed ranged from materials science and superconductors to supramolecular chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, fullerenes, liquid crystals, and photoinduced electron transfer. Renowned researchers presented their insights, contributing to a rich dialogue on the latest advancements in various chemistry fields.
