En savoir plus sur le livre

Over the last decade, researchers have learned much about the regulation and structure of the ion pumps most relevant to renal function. This issue provides a comprehensive summary of current knowledge on these critical transport enzymes with particular emphasis on the kidney. The Na,K-pump is examined in six reviews which discuss structure-function relationships, expression and distribution of the pump's various forms within the nephron, its regulation by corticosteroids and the influence of second messengers on its function. Also discussed is the controversy surrounding endogenous circulating inhibitors of the Na,K-ATPase, Na,K-pump inhibition, and the pump's role in ammonium transport within the nephron. Issues relating to calcium transport mechanisms are examined in three reviews, one of which looks at the characteristics of the Ca-ATPase in vascular smooth muscle. The final section contains five reviews which address questions relating to renal acid-base balance and which seek to give new clinical insights by integrating molecular, biochemical, and histologic data.
