The contributions in this book stem from the workshop “Research and Clinical Application of Isolated Liver Perfusion for Hepatic Tumors,” held in Hanover, Germany, from February 28 to March 1, 1997. This event aimed to unite global experts in isolated liver perfusion techniques. Oncologists, surgeons, and pathologists presented their perspectives on the indications and oncological rationale for therapeutic isolated liver perfusion. The discussions highlighted that, based on previous studies of locoregional chemotherapy and the pathology of metastasis, isolated liver perfusion has a role in liver cancer treatment. Various surgical techniques were showcased, ranging from percutaneous approaches with extracorporeal chemofiltration to extensive open abdominal surgeries. It was demonstrated that liver perfusion could be achieved with minimal systemic drug exposure, although the complexity of the extracorporeal perfusion techniques posed challenges. Future research should focus on simplifying these technical and surgical processes. Additionally, the workshop addressed the intraoperative and postoperative management of patients, particularly the risk of coagulopathy during isolated liver perfusion, which can lead to systemic side effects.
