Geological structures are inherently three-dimensional but are often represented through two-dimensional outcrop and structure contour maps. While maps and serial sections (2½-D) offer a closer approximation to three-dimensionality, advancements in computer technology now enable the development of geological interpretations in a fully three-dimensional environment. This shift allows for significantly improved interpretations that are easier to share with both geologists and the public. The text explores techniques for constructing structural interpretations in 2-D, 2½-D, and 3-D, as well as methods for interpolating and extrapolating data beyond control points while validating the final interpretations. Emphasizing that structures are three-dimensional solid bodies, it advocates for integrating data from various formats into a cohesive 3-D interpretation. The book is designed for computer users, offering quantitative structural methods suitable for spreadsheets, mapping software, and 3-D computer graphics programs. Additionally, it aims to enhance understanding of interpretive software, such as computer contouring programs. Techniques are presented in both traditional formats for manual calculations and quantitative formats for digital applications.
