Charophytes in the Baltic sea

At the first and second Workshop on „Charophytes in the Baltic Sea,“ an overview of the distribution and status of Charophytes along the Baltic coastline was initiated. These workshops, supported by the Marine and Coastal Nature Conservation unit of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) on the Isle of Vilm, brought together 20 specialists from all Baltic countries. For the first time, a comprehensive survey of species distribution was conducted, revealing trends in population dynamics and identifying potential threats. As a result, a task catalogue was established for a newly formed working group of the Baltic Marine Biologists (BMB). This catalogue includes the compilation of data for a „Red List“ and the creation of a common determination key for Charophytes in the Baltic ecoregion. The first results regarding Charophytes in the Baltic Sea are presented in this issue. The workshops not only provided insights into species occurrence but also facilitated the analysis of population trends and threats, setting the stage for future research and conservation efforts in the region.
