Berlin, Brussels, Florence, London, Toronto, and Zurich are captivating western metropolises, each representing unique icons of international commerce, finance, and tourism. However, beneath their striking appearances lies a troubling reality marked by social and ethnic ghettos, driven by quick profit and consumerism. Despite these challenges, there are significant forces in these cities confronting these seemingly irreversible trends. INURA, an International Network for Urban Research and Action, previously highlighted urban renewal in 1998 with Possible Urban Worlds. Their latest publication, Contested Metropolis, focuses on these six cities, showcasing key critics and alternative urban projects. This documentation presents insightful reports, informed by a deep understanding of local contexts, illustrating how urban spaces can be revitalized to better meet the needs of residents. Through text and imagery, it reveals innovative approaches to urban living, offering valuable lessons and experiences that can inspire similar efforts in other cities.
