Constraint solving and language processing

En savoir plus sur le livre

This volume features selected and revised papers, along with contributions from invited speakers, presented at the First International Workshop on Constraint Solving and Language Processing, held in Roskilde, Denmark, from September 1–3, 2004. Constraint Programming, particularly Constraint Logic Programming, is emerging as a highly promising platform for advancing natural language processing due to its natural specification and efficient implementation. The term "language" encompasses written and spoken forms, as well as formal and semi-formal languages, and general input data for multimodal systems, all of which can be managed similarly through constraint programming. The concept of constraints applies to the characterization of linguistic and cognitive phenomena, formal linguistic models, and implementation frameworks. The field is experiencing rapid development of new efficient methods and paradigms that benefit language processing. A prevalent metaphor for human language processing likens it to a large constraint-solving process, where various linguistic and cognitive phases occur in parallel and cooperate, aligning well with contemporary constraint programming paradigms.
