Kerstin Press adopts a novel methodological approach to explore the development process following external shocks. She creates a theoretical model of clusters, change, and adaptation, grounded in the N/K model of complex systems. By building on insights from N/K systems, she derives propositions regarding the impact of cluster architecture on adaptability. These propositions are subsequently tested through simulations that compare the adaptability of clusters with varying architectural features, specifically focusing on the division of labor and governance structures. Previous empirical studies have highlighted the significance of these aspects for cluster adaptability, yet general causal relationships for their roles in cluster adjustment remain unclear from individual case studies. The simulation model, which maintains an all else held equal perspective, offers explanations for how and when division of labor and governance influence cluster adjustment. Although the model has limitations, these are seen as potential areas for future research. This study paves the way for new directions in cluster research, shifting the focus from mere emergence or existence to understanding clusters as dynamic entities capable of adapting to external changes, marking a significant step towards a non-deterministic view of cluster development.
