The Kunstmuseum in Stuttgart has been situated in the central 'Kleiner Schloßplatz' since the 1960s, a site marked by post-war planning mistakes. Originally disrupted by transport planners and later overshadowed by contemporary structures, the square became a focal point for architectural debates in Stuttgart. Over three decades and several competitions, architects Rainer Hascher and Sebastian Jehle emerged with a compelling design after various proposals, including a Postmodern and a technocratic one. Their award-winning design features a striking glass cube that addresses the spatial needs of an extensive art collection, including notable works by Otto Dix and others, by utilizing a disused tunnel from the old road system. This innovative approach provides the museum with the necessary space for contemporary art while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic that reflects Swabian restraint. The cube’s top floor, accessible to the public, offers stunning views of the city center. Svenja Bockhop, an architect with a background in photography, works with Hascher Jehle Architektur. Roland Halbe, a seasoned architecture photographer, has documented significant buildings across Spain and Germany. Kaye Geipel, an architecture historian and editor for Bauwelt, focuses on the evolution of modern architecture since the mid-20th century.
