Historic structures showcase remarkable architecture and materials, enduring through generations for decades, centuries, or even millennia. To effectively conserve these buildings, it is crucial to understand the deterioration processes primarily driven by environmental changes. The complexity of these alterations often leads to their neglect in preservation efforts. Key contemporary issues such as climate change, the adaptation of historic buildings, and energy efficiency must be prioritized in our preservation strategies. The challenge of conserving these structures for future European generations is significant, particularly given limited financial resources. A recent workshop highlighted European initiatives and research in cultural heritage preservation, showcasing findings from both national projects and ongoing European collaborations funded by the European Commission. Topics discussed included smart monitoring technologies (like wireless sensors), non-destructive testing methods for evaluating historic structures, and assessing climate change impacts on cultural heritage. Additionally, simulation tools for modeling deterioration processes and strategies for improved management and maintenance of heritage sites were explored, alongside case studies demonstrating successful preservation techniques.
