The Second Joint Research Conference of the Universities of Gloucestershire and Chemnitz occurred at Chemnitz University of Technology from September 9-11, 2009, featuring presenters from seven nations. This partnership is marked by an active student exchange program, joint teaching modules, and collaborative research, which continued post-conference alongside various guest lectures. The 2009 Conference focused on Public Health and Sports, with key areas including Physiology and Biomechanics, Philosophy and Social Science, and Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Health Promotion. Noteworthy presentations included the Clem Burke Drumming Project, exemplifying international research collaboration and inspiring the DRUM BEAT Project, which explores drumming as therapy. Both universities aim to establish outreach programs with local communities, such as the Healthy Town Project in Tewkesbury and a similar initiative in Chemnitz. These programs could enhance international research ties and lead to joint funding proposals, including an EU research submission by Gloucester colleagues. Discussions also included the potential for a joint international degree.
