The strong influence of Stoicism on Modern ethical, juridical, and political thought is well recognized. Central to Stoic naturalism is the doctrine of oikeiosis, which merges two approaches: one focusing on the natural constitution of living beings, their vital impulses, and fundamental perceptive and cognitive abilities; the other emphasizing the explanation of animal behavior, and subsequently human behavior, in terms of what constitutes "good."
