The design and implementation of service-oriented architectures raise numerous research questions in software engineering, system analysis, adaptability, and application integration. Component orientation and web services are vital approaches for creating complex web-based systems, enabling dynamic application adaptation and enterprise application integration. Technologies like J2EE and .NET have become standards for complex distributed systems, while the evolution of component systems has led to the development of web services and service-based architectures, reflected in industry standards such as XML, WSDL, UDDI, and SOAP. This evolution fosters a new paradigm in IT systems engineering, advocating for the design of complex software solutions as collaborations of contractually defined software services. Service-Oriented Systems Engineering merges best practices from object orientation, component-based development, distributed computing, and business process management, integrating business and IT concerns. The annual Ph.D. Retreat of the Research School allows members to present their research progress and outline prospective theses. The interdisciplinary nature of the Research School encompasses a variety of topics, including Self-Adaptive Service-Oriented Systems, Operating System Support, Architecture and Modeling, Adaptive Process Management, Services Composition and Workflow Planning, Security Engineering, Quantitative
