Nietzsche's critique of the modern subject is often seen as a radical departure from modern philosophy, linked to the ‘death of the subject’ in 20th-century thought. However, Nietzsche identified as a ‘psychologist’ aiming to explore ‘new versions and sophistications of the soul hypothesis.’ While he certainly articulated a crisis in the modern understanding of subjectivity from both theoretical and existential viewpoints, it remains debated whether he sought to abandon the concept of subjectivity or merely to reframe the issue. This volume features 26 articles by leading Nietzsche scholars. Part I, “Tradition and Context,” examines the connection between Nietzsche's ideas on subjectivity and modern philosophy, alongside the late 19th-century context of his thought. Part II, “The Crisis of the Subject,” explores the influence of Nietzsche's critique on 20th-century philosophy, impacting figures like Freud, Heidegger, and Dennett, as well as Deleuze, Foucault, Derrida, and Luhmann. Part III, “Current Debates - From Embodiment and Consciousness to Agency,” highlights how Nietzsche's engagement with themes such as self, agency, consciousness, embodiment, and self-knowledge renders his ideas particularly relevant for contemporary discussions in philosophy of mind and ethics.
