Since the turn of the millennium, Zurich has experienced significant urban transformation, with former industrial areas evolving into residential neighborhoods to accommodate a growing population. In 2006, the City Council established a strategic committee to create a public art program linked to the city's development. The Working Group for Public Art has initiated numerous projects, including a 2011 research initiative exploring various forms of public art. Collaborating with institutions like the Lucerne School of Art and Design and the Zurich University of the Arts, along with young Swiss artists, the group examined innovative ideas. This volume supports communal public art projects by offering guidelines for best practices and serves as a manual for planning, launching, financing, realizing, documenting, and evaluating projects. It features reference examples that document the research process and showcase artists' proposals, including projects like Superkilen, Ecobox, Quatschmobil, and The Center for Urban Pedagogy, both locally and internationally. The publication provides insights into the specific contexts of these projects, the groups involved, their successes, and public feedback. Additionally, it includes a global catalogue of recent public art projects and an extensive bibliography on contemporary urban planning.
