Network Structures in Virtual Environments

En savoir plus sur le livre

Does network theory enhance our understanding of collaborative virtual environments? This paper explores the most suitable network model for such environments, questioning the effectiveness of "scale-free networks" compared to "random" or "hierarchical networks." It examines key network qualities like modularity, efficiency, and economy, as well as the relevance of spatial centrality and urban design tools. Through an abstract network depiction of a collaborative virtual environment, the study reveals inconclusive interpretations across five use cases, yet identifies intriguing trends. The intersection of simulation and virtual environments is highlighted, with a focus on the philosophy of science, simulation, and scientific modeling. The paper emphasizes that simulation is an interdisciplinary technique, integral to general simulation systems, and operates in three stages to support early innovation processes. It discusses the qualities, advantages, disadvantages, and application areas of simulation. Ultimately, network theory proves valuable in understanding collaborative virtual environments, enabling the depiction of all elements and relationships in an operational manner. Network simulation facilitates manipulation of these elements, offering insights into structural and behavioral changes, exploring scenarios, diagnosing issues, fostering consensus, and visualizing future directions.
