En savoir plus sur le livre

When George I, Elector of Hanover, became King of England in 1714, he initiated a dynastic union that lasted until 1837, leaving a rich legacy of cultural and political achievements. The 300th anniversary of this union prompted a critical examination of the gardens that emerged during this period, organized by the Institute of Landscape Architecture at Technische Universität Dresden and the Centre of Garden and Landscape Architecture at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Sponsored by the Lower Saxonian Ministry of Science and Culture, the symposium titled “Hanover and England: a union of state and garden / German and British garden culture between 1714 and today” explored more than just garden history. It addressed the broader exchange of ideas in art, agriculture, commerce, technology, literature, and politics. The involvement of various academic disciplines was essential to fully understand the cultural transfer between Great Britain and Hanover. The flourishing of horticultural and artistic ideas in the 19th century was a key focus, leading to an exploration of two main aspects: the Hanoverian-British exchange from 1714 to 1837 and the ongoing Anglo-German relations that continue to this day.
