In the 1920s, Frankfurt am Main embarked on an ambitious architectural and cultural renewal program known as the New Frankfurt. Spearheaded by Lord Mayor Ludwig Landmann and chief municipal planning officer Ernst May, this initiative aimed to implement the principles of the Modern Movement. Over 10,000 new residential units were planned starting in 1925, with architects from various backgrounds contributing to the project. They designed innovative family-oriented flats, affordable housing for low-income residents, the first fitted kitchens, and child-friendly schools, while also advancing industrial prefabrication techniques and urban green space planning. The first part of this book presents essays that explore the cultural context of the New Frankfurt initiative, the contributions of its advocates, the project's eventual decline, and the current housing market situation. The second part features richly illustrated short texts that delve into the program's key themes, notable estates, and buildings, providing a comprehensive overview of the New Frankfurt phenomenon. Each highlighted site includes addresses and public transport information, encouraging readers to explore Frankfurt's modernist heritage.
