Why? Explanations for drug use and drug dealing in social drug research

En savoir plus sur le livre

For thousands of years, humans have used substances known today as ‘drugs’ for various purposes, including pain relief, relaxation, and cultural rituals. To understand the widespread drug use in the 21st century, several macro-level factors must be explored. This volume provides insights into drug use, users, markets, and policies in Europe, contributed by authors engaged in local, national, and international research on these topics. Their work is primarily conducted outside laboratories and treatment centers, often on the streets, in nightclubs, and in private settings. The authors, social scientists from diverse disciplines such as anthropology, criminology, geography, economics, linguistics, psychology, sociology, and social psychiatry, emphasize qualitative research methods, including participant observation and in-depth interviews. Each chapter investigates why certain groups use specific substances, their preferred supply methods, and the rationale behind current drug policies. The book captures the complexities of drug use and dealing, highlighting the importance of understanding these phenomena in contemporary society. Zsuzsa Kaló, Julie Tieberghien, and Dirk J. Korf are among the contributors, bringing their expertise from various academic institutions.
