English Phonetics and Phonology

A Course for Arab Students

En savoir plus sur le livre

This book is the result of over twenty years of teaching phonetics and phonology to graduate and postgraduate students in the Middle East. It addresses the need for a coursebook that compares Arabic and English phonetics and phonology. To facilitate understanding of both languages at segmental and suprasegmental levels, the content is divided into two sections: Phonetics and Phonology. The phonetics section covers the definition of phonetics, vocal organs, and a detailed description of consonants and vowels in both languages. The phonology section defines phonology, distinguishes it from phonetics, and discusses phonemes and allophones with relevant examples. Extensive exercises on broad and narrow transcription are included. The prosody of both languages is explored through syllable structure, phonological processes, stress, and intonation. The theory of Distinctive Features is presented alongside numerous tasks and exercises. Each chapter concludes with true/false questions, multiple-choice questions, and direct questions for reinforcement. Phonetic symbols used throughout the book adhere to the International Phonetic Alphabet Chart (IPA).
