This volume features revised papers from the 23rd Annual Conference of the German Classification Society GfKl, held at the University of Bielefeld in March 1999, themed “Classification and Information Processing at the Turn of the Millennium.” The conference brought together researchers and practitioners engaged in data analysis, classification, and information processing across various fields, including computer science, multimedia, knowledge discovery, and data mining. Specific application areas discussed included biology, finance, genome analysis, marketing, medicine, public health, and text analysis, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration. The event included software and book presentations, along with tutorial courses. The scientific program comprised 18 plenary or semi-plenary lectures and over 100 presentations in specialized sections. The peer-reviewed papers are organized into five chapters: Data Analysis and Classification; Computer Science, Computational Statistics, and Data Mining; Management Science, Marketing, and Finance; Biology, Genome Analysis, and Medicine; and Text Analysis and Information Retrieval. Due to the complexity of categorizing some results, papers are grouped as deemed appropriate by the editors.
