A shy bookworm enlists her charming neighbor to help her find a date, unaware that he is the elusive author she has been corresponding with. Lily Greene, bookish and awkward, feels overshadowed by her accomplished family striving for Black excellence. Aspiring to be a children's book editor, she finds herself stuck in the nonfiction division without a promotion. Her solace comes from emails with her favorite fantasy author, which blossom into a tentative friendship until he suddenly ghosts her. Months later, still heartbroken, Lily resolves to take control of her life by finding a date for her sister's wedding. She turns to her attractive new neighbor, Nick Brown, feeling an inexplicable connection. Unbeknownst to her, Nick is the author she adored online. He has his reasons for using a pen name and distancing himself from others, but he soon realizes that the quiet girl from down the hall is the same Lily he fell for through their emails. Despite his growing feelings, he agrees to help her find someone else, complicating their neighborly relationship as he struggles to forget her.
