Few publications in English focus on the landforms of the Federal Republic of Germany. This book aims to address that gap, stemming from the Second International Conference on Geomorphology (Frankfurt am Main, 1989). It begins with a general introduction, followed by four key papers that discuss major landform regions, providing essential background and addressing significant questions in landform development that interest German geomorphologists. H. Liedtke examines the Pleistocene glaciations in the North German Lowlands, exploring the relationship between glacial depositional landforms and their later modifications. W. Andres analyzes conflicting interpretations of tectonic and climatic influences on Tertiary planation surfaces and Quaternary river terraces in the Central Uplands. In the South German Scarplands, H. Bremer highlights structural and climatic controls in the evolution of cuestas and valleys. K. Fischer discusses the complex nappe structure and its impact on landforms in the German Alps. The remaining papers focus on smaller regions, arranged regionally, with geographical locations provided. They delve into various themes, including structural landforms, Pleistocene glacial features, karst processes, Quaternary valley development, and the interplay between geomorphology, hydrology, and soils. A brief review of geomorphological mapping in the Federal Republic concludes the volume.
