For over a century, no US adversary has matched sixty percent of US GDP—except for China, which is emerging as a global superpower that could rival or surpass the United States. This raises critical questions: What does China want? Does it have a grand strategy? What should the US response be? The author draws from a wealth of Chinese primary sources, including party documents, leaked materials, and memoirs, to explore China's grand strategy since the Cold War's end. He reveals how Beijing has been methodically working to displace America from its dominant position in East Asia and the global order through three sequential strategies. Initially, from the 1980s, China focused on concealing its capabilities and biding its time. After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, it became more assertive regionally, actively pursuing its goals. Following the populist elections of 2016, China adopted an even more aggressive strategy, characterized by the phrase "great changes unseen in a century." After detailing the evolution of China's long game, the author presents a comprehensive yet asymmetric plan for an effective US response, leveraging strategies from Beijing's own playbook to counter China's ambitions and bolster American influence without engaging in direct competition.
