Set against the backdrop of rural Dutch farming, the story follows Selina Peake as she transitions from city life in Chicago to teaching in a one-room school. Embracing her new surroundings, she marries a kind-hearted farmer, Pervus DeJong, and raises their son, Dirk, whom she hopes will value education and the arts.
