Powerful graphic journalism highlights the contrasting realities of a Ukrainian journalist and a Russian artist grappling with their experiences of Russia’s war on Ukraine—collected and illustrated by award-winning author Nora Krug. After Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Krug began a year of correspondence with two anonymous subjects—“K.,” a Ukrainian journalist, and “D.,” a Russian artist. Based on weekly interviews, Krug created a collection of illustrated accounts that captures two opposing viewpoints from the war's first year. With millions displaced, injured, or killed, Krug presents the devastating effects on an individual level. In contrast, D.’s narrative expresses his disdain for his government’s actions and his struggle with cultural identity, guilt, and inaction against a tyrannical regime. Krug’s thoughtful approach encourages critical reflection on the political actions of readers' own countries. Published as an Op-Comic series with the Los Angeles Times, this work serves as a harrowing real-time record of an ongoing international conflict affecting countless lives.
