En savoir plus sur le livre

In this novel of identity and tribalism, Seventh Seltzer finds himself drawn back to his past during his overbearing mother's final moments. As she whispers her last request, "Eat me," he faces a profound dilemma. The Seltzers, a once-thriving group known as Cannibal-Americans, have a unique cultural heritage, but Seventh's mother's size—six-foot-two and four hundred fifty pounds—complicates matters. Divided among him and his eleven brothers, her request raises practical concerns, especially since family dynamics are strained: Second is kosher, Ninth is vegan, First despises her, and Sixth is deceased. To honor the request, Seventh must also confront the challenge of reviving their ancient traditions, as the only living Cannibal who knows the rituals, Uncle Ishmael, has a flawed grasp of their customs. Despite his complicated feelings towards his mother, guilt and a sense of responsibility weigh heavily on him. He grapples with the legacy she represents and the cultural chains he feels bound to. Irreverent and infused with humor, the story delves into themes of legacy, assimilation, and the obligations we have to our families versus ourselves.
