When Charlie Harris returns to school with his Maine Coon cat, Diesel, he becomes embroiled in a deadly lovers' quarrel on campus. Balancing his library duties and being a doting granddad, Charlie enrolls in an early medieval history course taught by the charismatic Professor Carey Warriner. Feeling out of place among younger classmates, he finds a kindred spirit in Dixie Bell Compton, another mature student. After overhearing a heated argument between Dixie and Warriner, Charlie is intrigued when she approaches him for study help. However, he declines, only to learn days later that Dixie has been murdered. Suspicion falls on Professor Warriner, whose troubled marriage to a successful author raises questions about a possible love triangle. As Charlie investigates, he uncovers that the professor's wife may harbor secrets of her own, complicating the suspect list. As he and Diesel delve deeper into the web of relationships, another murder occurs. With jealousy and rage at play, Charlie must race to solve the mystery, risking his own life to expose the killer.
