En savoir plus sur le livre

In the aftermath of World War II, Britain establishes the Control Commission for Germany to oversee its occupation and rebuild the nation while prosecuting war crimes. Thirtysomething Edith Graham, feeling aimless as a provincial schoolteacher and eager to escape her overbearing mother, applies for a position with the Commission. Her cousin Leo, involved in the Secret Service, recruits her for a covert mission. With her ordinary appearance and a degree in German, Edith is seen as ideal spy material. Leo tasks her with locating Count Kurt von Stavenow, a notorious war criminal he knew from Oxford. Embracing the challenge, Edith travels to Germany under the guise of an Education Officer focused on revitalizing schools. She creates an alter ego, Stella Snelling, a cookbook author who embeds vital intelligence within her recipes for her magazine column. However, the occupied territory is rife with spies and opportunists, and as Edith navigates this perilous landscape, she realizes that appearances can be deceiving. As she gets closer to uncovering von Stavenow's location and the network supporting him, the stakes rise, placing her in increasing danger.
