The Divine Comedy describes Dante's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, guided first by the Roman poet Virgil then by Beatrice, the subject of his love. The vision of Hell, is vivid, Purgatory is the most lyrical and human, Paradise is the most theological. Durante degli Alighieri was a major Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.
