A brilliant memoir of the author's second world war. In October 1940 he joined is family regiment, in June 1942 they were overrun and all but wiped out fighting a rearguard actioon in the Western Desert. He was a POW in Italy, then Germany. He escaped and spent the last months of his war fighting with the Soviet army.
