After a tragic loss, eleven-year-old Ollie finds comfort in books. When she encounters a frantic woman at the river threatening to toss a book into the water, Ollie impulsively steals it. As she reads, she discovers a chilling story about a girl named Beth, two brothers who love her, and a sinister figure known as "the smiling man," who grants wishes at a dire cost. Ollie becomes engrossed in the tale, but her school trip to Smoke Hollow, a local farm with a dark past, reveals a shocking connection: the graves of the characters from her book.
